Security personnel at the Federal University of Lafia have apprehended an unemployed graduate, Habibu Oshafu, for allegedly stealing a motorcycle on the university's permanent site, the institution's security unit confirmed on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Oshafu, a graduate of Accounting from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), who hails from Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was arrested on the campus premises and is currently in custody.
According to university sources, Oshafu was caught in the act by members of the FULafia security unit, who immediately took him into custody. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect has a prior record, having been apprehended months earlier for a similar offence and handed over to security agencies for appropriate action. A source within the security unit confirmed that the suspect, who graduated from NSUK in 2016, has been unemployed since completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, and his involvement in motorcycle theft may be linked to economic hardship.
The university's security unit has not issued an official statement on the incident, but sources confirmed that Oshafu would be handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution. The case underscores the growing challenge of motorcycle theft in Lafia and surrounding areas, which has become a recurring security concern in recent months. Students and residents have expressed concern over the rising incidents of theft, with some calling on security agencies to intensify patrols around the university and its environs.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal University of Lafia, Abubakar Abba, said he was not aware of the incident but promised to verify the details and provide an update. The Nasarawa State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the arrest, but police sources confirmed that the suspect would be transferred to the command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Efforts to reach the suspect's family were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. The Federal University of Lafia has not commented on whether additional security measures would be put in place to prevent future thefts on campus. The university security unit has, however, reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property within the institution and its environs.
