A senatorial aspirant for Imo North (Okigwe) Senatorial District under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Isaac Nwachukwu, has filed a suit before a Federal High Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State, challenging what he described as the illegal substitution of his name as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 general election. The aspirant, who claims to have paid a total of ₦25 million to the party for nomination and support, is seeking a court declaration recognising him as the NDC’s standard-bearer for the Imo North senatorial district.
In the suit filed through his counsel, C.J. Oguzie, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Nwachukwu is also seeking an order to compel the NDC to issue him a certificate of return and to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising any other candidate for the district. Nwachukwu alleged that he emerged as the consensus candidate after purchasing the expression of interest form for ₦5 million and making an additional ₦20 million contribution to support the party, which he deposited into the party’s FCMB account.
The aspirant alleged that irregularities emerged when the ₦20 million he paid for party support was credited to another aspirant, Matthew Omegara, while Omegara’s ₦10 million contribution was allocated to him by the screening committee headed by former Ebonyi State Governor Sam Egwu and Buba Galadima. Nwachukwu said his name was later substituted with Omegara’s despite having been cleared for the primary election. He also alleged that the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, summoned him to a meeting and informed him that former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa had complained through Peter Obi that he was not known politically.
Nwachukwu is asking the court to declare that he remains the consensus candidate of the NDC for the Imo North Senatorial District, restrain the party from fielding any other candidate, and compel INEC to recognise only him as the party’s candidate. As of the time of filing this report, neither the NDC, INEC, Peter Obi, Senator Seriake Dickson, nor Achike Udenwa had publicly responded to the allegations. The case is expected to test the legality of candidate selection processes within political parties as the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum.
