What began as a night of jubilation over Ghana’s opening World Cup victory ended in heartbreak on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, after a 26-year-old private legal practitioner collapsed and died from a suspected cardiac arrest while celebrating the Black Stars’ 1-0 win over Panama.

Sara Araba Tettey, a newly qualified lawyer and alumna of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel, a private student residence at Bomso, near the KNUST campus in Kumasi.

According to multiple reports from 3news, GhanaWeb, The Ghana Report, and YEN.com.gh, Tettey suddenly became unresponsive during the post-match celebrations after Ghana secured a stoppage-time victory, with midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi scoring the decisive goal.

Witnesses said she collapsed moments after the final whistle as jubilation erupted among patrons at the hostel. She was immediately rushed to the KNUST Hospital, popularly known as Tech Hospital, where medical personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes in a desperate effort to revive her. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, according to reports.

Tettey, who was called to the Ghana Bar in October 2025, worked with O & A Legal Consult in Kumasi. Described by colleagues as one of the promising young legal minds of her generation, she was widely admired by friends and former classmates. Known affectionately as “Araba Tettey,” she had already begun building a reputation as a dedicated and hardworking legal professional.

The tragic news has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian legal fraternity, particularly among members of the KNUST Law Faculty community and colleagues from the Ghana School of Law. Many have taken to social media to pay emotional tributes, with one friend describing the loss as “unimaginable” and another lamenting that “a promising light has been extinguished far too soon.”

Her body has since been deposited at the KNUST Medical School mortuary pending an autopsy and funeral arrangements. The circumstances surrounding her death are yet to be officially communicated by her family and medical authorities.

Ghana’s victory over Panama was the country’s first win at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Black Stars were on the back foot for much of the first half but grew into the game in the second half following tactical changes by coach Carlos Queiroz. The breakthrough came in stoppage time when Caleb Yirenkyi tapped in from close range from a Brandon Thomas-Asante cross, sparking wild celebrations across the country.

But for those who knew Sara Araba Tettey, the victory that brought joy to millions has also brought an unthinkable loss. Her passing has cast a sombre shadow over Ghana’s World Cup celebrations, turning what should have been a night of national pride into one of collective grief.
