Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has launched a blistering verbal attack on critics of President Bola Tinubu, declaring that those who refuse to see the administration’s developmental strides “may never see again” and should be cursed with permanent blindness for deliberately ignoring progress across the nation's capital. Wike made the remarks on Thursday, June 18, 2026, during the commissioning of the newly constructed 7‑kilometre access road from Bill Clinton Drive to Tungan Madaki settlement, an event that also featured President Tinubu, who was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Wike, who has been leading a 31‑day project commissioning spree across the FCT to mark the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, took a combative tone, accusing critics of deliberately ignoring development efforts unfolding across Abuja’s satellite towns. “Those who say they don’t see, may God never allow them to see,” Wike declared to applause from the gathering. “Those who intentionally, when God has given you eyes to see what is happening, to see the development coming to satellite town and you say you are not seeing, may you never see again”. He framed his remarks around the duty of government to solve problems for the people, stating: “We came to government to solve problems for the people. We came to government to solve problems of challenges”.
The minister’s outburst reflects a broader pattern of defiance from the former Rivers State governor, who has repeatedly dismissed critics of the administration as “politically expired” and “blind” to ongoing progress. Just two weeks earlier, on June 10, Wike had challenged any FCT resident to deny feeling the government’s impact, insisting that President Tinubu “should sleep with his two eyes closed” because of the administration’s achievements. In May 2025, he had similarly declared that “only the visually impaired could accuse the president of non‑performance”.
The road project itself was hailed by President Tinubu as a fulfillment of a promise made to communities affected by the airport’s second runway construction. Represented by Senate President Akpabio, Tinubu described the 7‑kilometre access road as “an economic artery” that would secure the airport perimeter, ease traffic gridlock, and unlock economic potential for Tungan Madaki and surrounding communities. “Let me state this clearly: no citizen should be made a victim of national development,” Tinubu said. “When the Honourable Minister of the FCT brought this matter to my attention, my directive was clear: whatever the communities ask for to make their lives whole, give it to them”.
Wike also used the occasion to contrast the administration’s performance with that of previous governments, urging Abuja residents to appreciate the pace of development unfolding in the capital. He noted that the joy of residents in satellite towns, who had long been neglected, stood in stark contrast to the indifference of city dwellers accustomed to infrastructure. “For those of us who are from communities, we feel so happy,” he said. “Not from those of you who are from the city, who are used to it; you don’t even care”.
The minister’s comments have drawn sharp reactions. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned the APC’s celebration of the judges’ housing project, describing it as a “shameless, unethical and inappropriate spectacle” that erodes public confidence in judicial independence. Meanwhile, the APC Abia chapter has accused Governor Alex Otti of taking credit for federal projects while refusing to acknowledge President Tinubu’s role.
The statement comes amid ongoing national discourse on the impact of Tinubu’s economic policies, with some citizens expressing hardship due to reforms, while others commend the long‑term vision. As Wike continues his 31‑day project commissioning spree, his message to critics is unambiguous: those who refuse to see the administration’s work may find themselves permanently in the dark.
