Ondo Bye-Election: Police Officers Raise Concerns Over Poor Logistics Ahead of Poll

Published on 19 June 2026 at 12:59

Less than 24 hours before the scheduled Ondo South Senatorial District bye-election, concerns have emerged over the welfare and logistical preparedness of security personnel deployed to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

Some police officers assigned to election security duties have reportedly expressed frustration over what they described as inadequate transport arrangements and poor welfare support from the authorities. The development has raised fresh concerns among stakeholders regarding the readiness of security agencies ahead of the crucial poll set for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

According to sources within the security operation, several officers were allegedly instructed to arrange transportation to their assigned polling units and duty posts by themselves, despite the importance of their role in safeguarding the election.

One officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, lamented the situation, stating that officers were unhappy about being deployed without adequate logistical support. According to the source, affected personnel were asked to find their own way to various polling locations across the senatorial district.

Another source also questioned the level of preparation by police authorities, especially concerning the mobility and welfare of officers expected to maintain law and order during the exercise. The source warned that insufficient transportation support could negatively affect operational efficiency and response time during the election.

Further findings suggest that the issue may primarily affect certain categories of officers mobilized from within Ondo State. Sources indicated that the affected personnel were largely drawn from various police divisions and districts across the state rather than from outside Ondo.

One source explained that only some transferred officers had yet to receive expected mobilization support, adding that they were likely redeployed internally for the election assignment.

The concerns come at a critical time as security agencies continue to play a central role in ensuring credible elections across Nigeria. Security personnel are responsible for preventing voter intimidation, electoral violence, ballot disruption, and other forms of malpractice that could undermine public confidence in the democratic process.

Election observers have consistently emphasized the need for proper welfare, mobility, and operational support for security personnel during elections. Analysts argue that well-equipped officers are better positioned to carry out their duties professionally and effectively, thereby contributing to peaceful and transparent electoral outcomes.

The Ondo South Senatorial District bye-election has attracted significant political attention, with major political parties intensifying efforts to secure victory. The election is expected to serve as a major test of political influence within the district.

The bye-election became necessary following the vacancy created by the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier released the final list of candidates cleared to contest the election. Among the leading contenders is the candidate of the (APC), Dr. Faduyile Francis Adedayo, a medical professional.

He will face competition from Nejo Funso Clement of the Boot Party, Akinwumi Adeolu Harrison of the (APM), and Adesanya Olaoluwa of the (APP).

As the election draws closer, stakeholders are calling on authorities to urgently address any logistical shortcomings that may hinder security operations. Many believe that prompt intervention is necessary to guarantee that security personnel can perform effectively and ensure voters exercise their civic rights in a safe and orderly environment.

With political tension rising and public attention fixed on the outcome, all eyes will be on security agencies and electoral officials as Ondo South heads to the polls.
