The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female law student, identified simply as Tomisin, sparking anxiety across the campus as security agencies intensify efforts to secure her safe return. The union, in an official statement issued on Friday, June 19, 2026, by its President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, said the student was returning from a religious retreat alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants when communication with her was lost.

Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and Vice-President of the Scripture Union, University of Ibadan chapter, had attended the National Conference of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State. Concerns over her whereabouts heightened after she failed to sit for her faculty examinations on both Monday and Tuesday. Another UI student from the Department of Music, who also attended the conference, returned safely, but the vehicle conveying the General Director and other participants remained unaccounted for.

The union dismissed reports claiming that eight UI students were missing, clarifying that Tomisin is the only student of the institution currently unaccounted for. According to Adeboye, the union has “initiated the necessary engagements to ascertain the facts surrounding the situation” and has established contact with relevant religious organisations and security agencies to facilitate appropriate intervention. The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ademola Lewis, confirmed that the university was aware of the incident, although the institution had not been informed beforehand about the trip.

In a separate update, the Students’ Union revealed that relevant security authorities, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Sango Division, have been fully briefed and are aware of the situation. Necessary inter-state collaboration and communication are ongoing, and engagement has been established with the national leadership of the Scripture Union to support ongoing efforts. Based on the latest update from the Scripture Union leadership, efforts towards the student’s safe rescue are progressing positively, and all parties involved remain committed to securing a safe and successful outcome.

The university management and student leaders have appealed for calm, urging students and members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information that could hamper ongoing investigations. As the search continues, the entire UI community remains on edge, hoping for the safe return of their colleague.
