Election officials on Saturday, June 20, 2026, commenced the deployment of personnel and sensitive election materials from the Super Registration Area Centre (RAC) in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State to polling units across the Rivers South East Senatorial District as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) entered the final stage of preparations for the senatorial bye-election.
The distribution exercise, which began in the early hours of the day, involved INEC officials, ad hoc staff, security personnel, and electoral materials being moved to designated polling units within the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district: Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Khana, and Gokana. Electoral officials said the process was progressing smoothly to ensure the timely opening of polls.
The bye-election is being conducted to fill the vacant Rivers South East Senatorial District seat in the National Assembly following the death of Senator Barry Mpigi, whose passing created the vacancy and necessitated a fresh election by INEC.
INEC had earlier announced that voting would take place on June 20, 2026, across 88 registration areas and 1,629 polling units spread throughout the senatorial district. The electoral body also assured voters and stakeholders of its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
At the Koroma Super RAC Centre in Tai Local Government Area, election officials coordinated the movement of voting materials while security agencies maintained surveillance around the facility. The deployment is a critical phase of election logistics aimed at ensuring that polling officials and materials arrive at their respective locations before voting begins.
The Rivers South East Senatorial District is one of the three senatorial districts in Rivers State and covers Andoni, Eleme, Gokana, Khana, Opobo/Nkoro, Oyigbo, and Tai local government areas. The district has historically been politically significant within the state because of its large voting population and strategic position within the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
The deployment exercise marks the final operational stage before the commencement of voting, with electoral authorities expressing confidence that adequate arrangements have been made to facilitate a smooth electoral process. Security agencies are also expected to remain on duty throughout the election to safeguard voters, election officials, and electoral materials.
Residents of the seven local government areas are expected to cast their votes during the bye-election, which will determine who succeeds the late Senator Barry Mpigi as the representative of Rivers South East Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.
