Police operatives in Zamfara State have recovered 329 rustled cattle, 175 sheep, one AK-47 rifle and 15 rounds of live ammunition during a joint security operation in the Gambanda Forest, marking another major victory in the sustained campaign against banditry and violent crimes in the North‑West region.

The operation was carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in collaboration with military personnel at about 2:30 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar. The joint security team launched a tactical operation at Gambanda Forest in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State after receiving intelligence on the presence of armed bandits and rustled livestock in the area.

During the operation, the security operatives engaged suspected armed bandits in a fierce gun battle. The superior firepower and coordinated response of the joint team forced the criminals to flee into the forest with suspected gunshot injuries, successfully foiling their attack. The operation led to the recovery of 329 rustled cattle, 175 sheep, one AK‑47 rifle, and 15 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition. The recovered livestock has since been handed over to the Committee on Recovery of Rustled Animals in Gusau for identification and return to their owners.

Commending the operatives, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Muhammad Bello, praised their courage, professionalism, and resilience. He reaffirmed the Command's unwavering commitment to eliminating banditry and restoring lasting peace and security across Zamfara State. The Commissioner urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information to assist ongoing operations.

The recovery comes amid intensified security operations across Zamfara State, where troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have sustained offensive actions against bandit enclaves. Just days before the Gambanda Forest operation, troops successfully repelled a bandit attack on Gabtu and Taka Tsaba communities in Gummi LGA, recovering rustled livestock and weapons. The back‑to‑back successes reflect the growing effectiveness of intelligence‑led operations and inter‑agency collaboration in the fight against banditry.

The Zamfara State Police Command reiterated its determination to put an end to banditry in the state and assured residents that security operations would continue until normalcy was fully restored. The Command also called on members of the public to remain calm and vigilant, and to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing operations.
