The family of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has raised serious concerns over the handling of his death and burial, alleging that key details surrounding his passing remain "unclear" and "suspicious". In a statement released on Thursday, David Ekubo, a cousin of the actor, claimed that family members were not properly informed about important developments, and that immediate relatives—including Ekubo's mother and only biological sibling—have yet to receive a formal explanation regarding the circumstances of his death.
Ekubo, 40, passed away on May 11, 2026, after a prolonged battle with stage 4 kidney cancer. His family had initially confirmed that he died from complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer at Evercare Hospital. He was laid to rest on June 18, 2026, at his grandfather's compound in Abia State, following a service of songs on June 10 and a wake attended by friends, relatives, and colleagues.
However, David Ekubo's statement has cast a shadow over the funeral proceedings. "With grave pain, heaviness and sorrow, the family of Ikenna Alex Ekubo advises the public that the events leading up to his passing have been unclear," the statement read. "The Ekubo family were not informed that he passed on the 11th of May". The cousin further alleged that the family member who officially received the actor's body from the mortuary was not allowed to view it.
The statement also questioned certain decisions surrounding the funeral arrangements, particularly the wearing of white during the burial activities. "The Ekubo family did not approve the wearing of white for what seemed to be a celebration of life for a 40-year-old Alex Ekubo whose life was suddenly cut short," David Ekubo alleged. He noted that Alexx's biological mother and only sibling, who are alive and well, are yet to be formally updated about the circumstances surrounding his "untimely and suspicious passing".
As of the time of this report, no official response has been issued by the actor's management team or representatives regarding the family's allegations. The Ekubo family continues to seek answers, stating that they are "yet to receive answers on how and why Alex passed away suddenly".
