In a sweeping offensive that spanned five states and the Federal Capital Territory, Nigerian troops have delivered a series of devastating blows to terrorist networks, rescuing seven kidnapped victims, arresting nine suspects, and recovering a significant cache of weapons and ammunition in coordinated operations conducted over the past 48 hours. The operations, carried out by troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Guards Brigade, and other Army formations, underscore the military's sustained offensive to dismantle criminal networks and deny them freedom of action across the country.
In Taraba State, troops of the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, acting on credible intelligence, raided a suspected terrorist hideout at Peva in Takum Local Government Area in the early hours of Thursday, September 3, 2026. Although the suspected bandit leader escaped before the troops arrived, five of his alleged associates were arrested following a thorough search of the area. The troops recovered two AK-47 magazines, 46 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a woodland camouflage jacket and jungle hat, four charm vests, and assorted charms.
In Zamfara State, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA ambushed terrorists moving from the Fakai general area towards Kwanar Jolof and Tashar Dole in Shinkafi and Zurmi Local Government Areas, neutralising several terrorists. The troops recovered one RPG launcher, one RPG bomb, one AK-47 rifle, six AK-47 magazines, 106 rounds of ammunition, and a motorcycle. The seizure of an RPG launcher and bomb represents a significant disruption to the terrorists' heavy weapons capability.
In Kaduna State, troops operating a snap checkpoint along the Saulawa–Zaria Road intercepted a vehicle for inspection. When a passenger resisted the search and attempted to escape, he was neutralised by the troops. A subsequent search of his bag uncovered 793 rounds of ammunition ingeniously concealed inside a bag of gari (cassava flakes). The vehicle and its driver were taken into military custody for further investigation.
In the Federal Capital Territory, troops of the Guards Brigade and Army Headquarters Garrison rescued Mrs Adonkie, the wife of retired Brigadier General Basil Adonkie, who was abducted from her residence on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Acting on intelligence, the troops pursued the kidnappers through the Aco Estate–Goza Community axis, forcing them to abandon the victim at Angwan Sabo Village. A follow-up operation on Thursday led to the arrest of two suspected kidnappers near Gaube Village in Kuje Area Council. The troops also recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
In Kebbi State, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA rescued six kidnapped victims along the Wasagu–Ayu Road in Wasagu Local Government Area after engaging terrorists in a fierce gun battle. The troops' swift response and superior firepower forced the terrorists to flee and abandon their victims, who were rescued unharmed. A vehicle recovered during the operation was handed over to relevant community authorities.
The coordinated operations highlight the military's intensified intelligence-driven campaign against terrorist and criminal networks. The recovery of an RPG launcher and bomb, alongside a substantial quantity of ammunition, represents a major disruption to the terrorists' logistics and supply chain. The interception of nearly 800 rounds of ammunition hidden in a food item underscores the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by criminal networks to evade detection. As the military continues its relentless offensive, the message is clear: the days of impunity for terrorists and kidnappers are numbered, and the long arm of the law is closing in on those who seek to destabilise the nation.
