Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under Operation FANSAN YAMMA have neutralised a suspected terrorist during an operation in Soruro village, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The operation took place in the early hours of Monday, October 12, 2026, after troops at the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Binji, received a distress call reporting the presence of suspected terrorists in the community.
According to a report published on Monday, the troops mobilised to the location and engaged the suspected terrorists at about 5 a.m., resulting in the death of one suspect.
The troops reportedly recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine and 27 rounds of 7.62mm x 39 ammunition during the operation.
The initial report did not provide details about the identities of those involved, whether other suspects escaped or whether any civilian or military personnel sustained injuries during the encounter.
The incident comes amid ongoing military operations against armed groups operating across parts of north-western Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto State, where communities have faced threats from the Lakurawa group and other armed elements.
Tangaza, which shares a border area with the Niger Republic, has experienced repeated security challenges, including attacks on rural communities and confrontations between armed groups and security forces.
Troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA have continued patrols and counterterrorism operations in the region as part of efforts to disrupt armed groups and improve security in affected communities.
In May 2026, troops operating in Tangaza reportedly killed two suspected Lakurawa members after responding to a distress call over an attempted attack on a Nigerian Immigration Service facility at Ruwa Wiri village. Weapons and ammunition were recovered following that encounter.
The latest operation highlights the importance of timely information from residents in helping security personnel respond to reported threats.
However, further details about Monday's incident, including an official military statement confirming the suspect's alleged affiliation with Lakurawa, were not immediately available.
