More than 30 suspected bandits have reportedly been killed following a three-day confrontation involving local vigilantes, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and security forces providing air support in Zamfara State.

The clashes occurred around Birnin Tudu in Gummi Local Government Area, where armed attackers reportedly attempted to overrun communities, leaving at least five civilians dead and several residents injured. Security reports indicated that local defenders, supported by the air component of Operation Fansan Yamma, forced the attackers to retreat.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the confrontation began after residents received information about a large group of armed men approaching Birnin Tudu from the direction of Bukkuyum.

More than 59 motorcycles carrying suspected bandits were reportedly sighted moving towards the area before the attackers entered surrounding settlements.

Residents said the gunmen arrived on Tuesday morning while many villagers were working on their farms. The attackers allegedly opened fire, looted shops and attempted to move livestock stolen from neighbouring communities.

Local vigilantes, including members of the Yan Sakai security network, subsequently confronted the attackers, while CJTF personnel and aerial support reportedly helped prevent the armed group from taking control of the settlement.

Initial reports suggested that 11 suspected bandits had been killed, but subsequent accounts placed the number above 30 as fighting continued across surrounding locations.

The casualty figures have not been independently confirmed by military or police authorities.

Despite the resistance, the attacks caused civilian casualties and significant economic losses. Five residents were reportedly killed while returning from their farms, while armed men allegedly rustled approximately 1,000 cattle and seized motorcycles during raids on nearby communities.

Surviving attackers reportedly withdrew towards forested areas around Nasarawa Kifi and neighbouring settlements, raising concerns about possible renewed attacks.

A local vigilante commander, Bello Abubakar, popularly known as Bello Karo Birnin Tudu, appealed to security agencies and the Gummi Local Government Council for additional protection.

He said community defenders had received advance information about the attackers' movements but lacked sufficient personnel and equipment to secure all vulnerable routes.

Abubakar called for reinforcements and additional operational resources, warning that the armed group could attempt a reprisal.

The latest confrontation highlights the continuing security challenges facing rural communities in Zamfara, where armed attacks have disrupted farming, livestock production and everyday activities.

Although local reports indicate that the attackers were repelled, the exact number of casualties and the extent of the damage remain subject to official confirmation.
