Uyo, October 13, 2025 — The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council held its regular meeting at the Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office, Uyo, with Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, presiding as Chairman. The session brought together the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Secretary to the State Government, Head of the Civil Service, Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisor, as well as Honourable Commissioners and Special Advisers.
Governor Umo Eno welcomed members and urged steadfast commitment to the ideals of his administration, emphasizing service delivery, collaboration, and the full realization of the ARISE Agenda for the state’s development within prescribed timelines.
During the meeting, the council approved the formation of a special committee to realign and update ministerial responsibilities, aimed at resolving areas of overlap and ensuring efficiency. The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, includes the Head of Civil Service, Executive Assistant, Attorney General, Solicitor-General, and other key officials, with a six-week timeline to submit its report.
The Executive Council also approved the establishment of the Office of the Public Defender under the Ministry of Justice. The office is tasked with providing free legal representation to indigent residents, safeguarding the rights of the vulnerable, reducing the number of suspects detained without trial, and educating citizens on their rights and obligations to support justice sector reforms.
The council reviewed the State of Emergency in the Health Sector, approving project timelines including the recruitment of doctors and medical professionals, enhancement of allowances for health workers, evaluation and completion of BOQs for hospital and primary healthcare rehabilitation, and the commissioning of General Hospital, Ukanafun on November 10, 2025. A stakeholders’ dialogue in the health sector is scheduled for November 8–9, 2025, while plans for a medical residency training fund are underway.
In education, the council approved the upgrading of the College of Education, Afaha Nsit, to the Akwa Ibom State University of Education, aligning with the ARISE Agenda’s focus on human capital development. The council also ratified ongoing projects and memos under the FGPC to ensure continued implementation of developmental initiatives across the state.
Earlier in the day, Governor Eno received the AIG Zone 6, Auwal Mohammed Musa, who commended the state’s support for policing and security agencies through logistical and welfare assistance. The Executive Council concluded the day with a condolence visit to the family of the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, paying tribute to the revered God’s General.
