Gov. Sule Distributes 100 Electric Vehicles to Youths, Launches Charging Centres in Nasarawa

In a landmark move towards youth empowerment and sustainable development, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has distributed 50 electric cars and 50 electric tricycles to selected youths across the state.

The programme, unveiled Thursday in Lafia, is designed to equip beneficiaries with tools to run transportation businesses, create jobs, and reduce the state’s dependence on petrol at a time when rising fuel costs are biting hard nationwide.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Sule said the vehicles are fully powered by electricity, air-conditioned, and capable of running for an entire day after charging.

He noted that a dedicated charging centre has already been established at the State Secretariat in Lafia, while similar facilities will be built in Akwanga and Keffi to serve the three senatorial districts.

“This initiative is about creating opportunities for our youths, cutting transportation costs for our people, and building a cleaner, greener Nasarawa,” Governor Sule said.

The first batch of cars and tricycles will be deployed to Lafia, Akwanga, and Keffi, where they will convey civil servants to offices and also serve students in Federal University of Lafia, College of Education Akwanga, and Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

The Governor explained that the plan would help cushion economic hardship, ensure affordable transport for communities, and gradually position the state as a hub for green mobility.

Retired Justice Muhammad Sidi-Bage, Emir of Lafia and Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs, hailed the project as both visionary and timely.

He urged beneficiaries to use the vehicles responsibly, stressing that responsible use would ease the high cost of transportation in the state.

The Emir also pledged the support of traditional rulers for government initiatives, assuring that the royal institution will remain non-partisan while backing programmes that improve citizens’ lives.

Stone Reporters News observes that Nasarawa is now one of the first Nigerian states to integrate electric vehicles into public use. At a time when fuel subsidy removal has sent transport costs soaring nationwide, the scheme provides a practical response to economic pressure while also aligning with global goals on climate change and sustainable development.

If properly sustained and expanded, the initiative could become a national model for balancing youth empowerment, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
