The Delta State Government has stepped in following the alleged assault and stripping of Miss Jennifer Elohor, a Delta-born corps member serving in Anambra State, by members of a local vigilante group.
On the directive of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Delta State Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. ThankGod Trakiriowei, on Thursday visited Awka, where he met with the Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and the NYSC State Coordinator to demand full accountability over the incident.
Governor Oborevwori described the reported assault as “inhumane and unacceptable”, insisting that under his administration’s MORE Agenda, the dignity, safety, and welfare of every Delta youth remain a top priority.
The Governor further disclosed that he will personally meet with Miss Elohor in Warri on Friday, to hear directly from her, extend government’s support, and ensure she receives both medical and psychological assistance, alongside legal backing if necessary.
During the meeting in Awka, Commissioner Trakiriowei pressed for a transparent investigation into the actions of the vigilante operatives involved. He emphasized that no Nigerian youth serving the nation should be subjected to humiliation or abuse, regardless of their posting location.
Officials of the Anambra State Government and the NYSC reportedly assured that the matter will be treated with urgency, with disciplinary steps already being considered against the perpetrators.
The incident has sparked outrage among youth groups and civil society organizations, many of whom argue that the attack reflects a wider problem of unchecked vigilante powers in local communities. Analysts warn that such abuses risk undermining the objectives of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which is designed to promote national unity and youth development.
The Delta State Government reiterated its readiness to stand by its citizens anywhere in Nigeria, while urging security agencies and state governments to review the operations of local vigilante groups to prevent further abuses.
Governor Oborevwori assured that the case of Miss Elohor will not be swept under the carpet, stressing: “Every Delta youth is an ambassador of the state, and their protection is non-negotiable.”
