The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on legislators to uphold accountability and good governance in their roles. He delivered this charge on Thursday, August 21, 2025, during the Policy Dialogue and Public Unveiling of the 10th National Assembly’s Deliberative Barometer and Policy Focus Productivity Report, organized by the Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation (ERGAF-Africa) in collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC).
Olukoyede, speaking through the Director of Public Affairs, Commander CE Wilson Uwujaren, urged organizers to focus on legislative accountability, noting that previous reports and discussions were silent on governance matters. While commending the organizers for their efforts, he emphasized the importance of evaluating legislators’ contributions to national development.
Other notable remarks included:
-
Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, represented by Hon. Cyril Godwin Hart, emphasized the need to raise the standard of representation, lawmaking, and oversight. He stressed that spotlighting legislative output strengthens democratic processes and enhances the impact of lawmakers’ decisions.
-
Professor Abubakar Suleiman, Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), applauded the initiative, noting that accurate data and artificial intelligence can drive transparency and enhance governance accountability.
-
Hon. Bamidele Salam, in a goodwill message, highlighted that citizens are primarily concerned with the dividends of democracy and the tangible outcomes of legislative work, calling for government support to sustain such initiatives.
The launch of the Deliberative Barometer and Policy Focus Productivity Report is part of broader efforts to strengthen evidence-based lawmaking in Nigeria. By tracking legislative output, the initiative seeks to promote accountability, transparency, and performance evaluation within the National Assembly.
As public trust in institutions hinges on responsiveness, efficiency, and integrity, such tools help citizens and stakeholders assess whether elected representatives are delivering on their mandates.
Across Africa, democratic consolidation depends on robust legislative oversight, transparency, and data-driven governance. Initiatives like the Deliberative Barometer align with international best practices, where independent evaluation and technological tools enhance policymaking and civic engagement.
The EFCC’s emphasis on accountability also signals a growing recognition that corruption prevention is closely tied to legislative integrity, highlighting the need for cooperation between anti-graft agencies, lawmakers, and civil society.
EFCC Chairman Olukoyede’s call underscores that accountability and good governance are non-negotiable pillars of democratic leadership. By leveraging data, AI, and citizen engagement, initiatives such as the Deliberative Barometer can strengthen legislative performance, reinforce public trust, and ensure that democratic dividends are realized for Nigerians.
