Hon. Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, former Deputy Governor (Operations) of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is leading Nigeria’s power sector delegation at the TICAD9 forum. The delegation aims to activate Japan-backed energy projects, engage top equipment manufacturers, and accelerate delivery across Nigeria’s power sector.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ¥53 million for project activation and N13 billion for Right-of-Way compensation, vital steps toward executing ongoing energy initiatives. Implementation timelines are being finalized in collaboration with Japanese partners.

The delegation engaged with Toshiba and Hitachi facilities tied to upcoming grid infrastructure projects, as well as Japan’s Transmission & Distribution Corporation and Energy Exchange, to share best practices and strategies for loss reduction. Technical training and equipment installation at NAPTIN in Abuja are already underway as part of these collaborations.

Nigeria is activating a $190 million JICA renewable energy facility, complementing the country’s $750 million World Bank clean energy fund under the Mission 300 initiative. Plans are also being finalized to commission three JICA-funded substations in Apo and Keffi (FCT) and Apapa (Lagos), funded via a $32 million Japanese grant, moving the projects from agreement to action and ensuring tangible results for Nigeria’s power sector.

These engagements at TICAD9 highlight Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its power infrastructure, adopting international best practices, and expanding access to reliable and renewable energy, marking a decisive step toward achieving sustainable energy for growth.
