Ondo State Cracks Down on Illegal Schools, Sets New Standards to Reposition Education Sector

The Ondo State Ministry of Education has unveiled critical measures to reform and strengthen private school operations across the state, aiming to restore the sector to its former prominence. Key decisions announced include the prohibition of illegal and unregistered schools, the banning of graduation ceremonies for nursery and JSS 3 students, and the re-accreditation of all private schools to ensure quality assurance.

These directives were communicated to school proprietors during a stakeholders’ meeting spanning the state’s 18 Local Government Areas. Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, emphasized the vital role of private schools in the education ecosystem and pledged government support to ease regulatory processes and provide guidance where necessary. He warned that any school failing to meet minimum standards would no longer be permitted to operate, while schools running illegally would have a six-month grace period to regularize their status.

Professor Ajibefun highlighted several areas of concern, including the mandatory use of recommended textbooks, adherence to the approved curriculum, observance of official school calendars, and restrictions on unapproved excursions, underage admissions, and compulsory extra lessons. He also banned the implementation of foreign or unapproved curricula without clearance and stressed that advanced learning resources must match the age and capacity of learners.

The commissioner further announced plans to digitize all primary and secondary schools in the state, enabling students to access a modern educational platform. Measures such as permitting siblings to reuse textbooks aim to reduce unnecessary financial burdens on parents.

Private school proprietors welcomed the reforms, commending both the Ministry and Governor for taking proactive steps to improve education while advocating for streamlined processes for school accreditation.

These reforms mark a decisive effort by the Ondo State Government to elevate education standards and promote accountability within private institutions. By enforcing minimum standards and modernizing school operations, the administration aims to ensure that students receive quality education while reducing malpractices and inefficiencies that have previously undermined the sector. The initiative also reflects a broader strategy to align educational outcomes with global best practices, fostering long-term human capital development in the state.
