The North-East Zonal Director of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Mrs. Deborah T. Rukop, has commended the Bauchi State Government for its “remarkable investments” in the education sector, highlighting the administration’s sustained commitment to improving learning outcomes across the state.
Mrs. Rukop led a delegation to the office of the State Commissioner for Education to formally acknowledge the support provided under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed. She noted that the state has consistently prioritized education, sponsoring Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) candidates for several years, financing the re-accreditation of public schools, and introducing free education initiatives aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children.
“The Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to education, providing scholarships for students both locally and abroad, renovating schools to create conducive learning environments, and ensuring that students have access to quality education,” Rukop said.
Highlighting the importance of continued support at all levels of education, she appealed to the state government to extend similar sponsorship to the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). She emphasized that government-backed funding of the BECE would ease financial pressure on parents and encourage broader participation among junior secondary school students.
In response, Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Mohammed Rimin Zayam, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to education. He credited Governor Bala Mohammed for settling all inherited debts on examination fees, stating, “Since the coming of Governor Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State has never written examinations on debt. He cleared all outstanding backlogs left by previous administrations. He is education-friendly, and everything we are doing is with his support.”
Regarding the proposal for BECE sponsorship, Dr. Zayam explained that the Ministry of Education currently organizes the examination internally but assured that collaboration with NECO would be seriously considered to further enhance accessibility and standardization.
The visit underscores the state’s drive to strengthen education at all levels, ensuring that both junior and senior secondary students receive the support necessary to excel academically. Through sustained government investment and strategic partnerships, Bauchi continues to set a benchmark for educational development in the North-East zone.
