The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a comprehensive Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework, designed to ensure that all teachers in public and private schools undergo thorough background checks prior to employment. The initiative, championed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, aims to restore professionalism and accountability within the education system by entrusting the education of future generations to individuals of impeccable moral character.
Under the new framework, all teacher registrations and licensing processes will be integrated into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal. This integration allows for real-time monitoring of teachers’ credentials, ensuring that schools employ only qualified and verified personnel. The move is also expected to curb impersonation, forgery, and the recruitment of unqualified staff, which have historically undermined educational quality in the country.
Speaking on the initiative, TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, highlighted that the digital portal will not only manage registration and verification but also enhance teacher performance. Features such as AI-powered lesson planning and state-level investigation panels are set to support professional development and uphold high teaching standards across Nigeria.
Minister Alausa emphasized that the framework represents a decisive step in safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s education sector. By prioritizing ethics and accountability, the government seeks to create an environment where students can learn under competent, trustworthy, and morally responsible educators.
