Nigeria has taken a historic step in driving the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agenda by presenting the continent’s first 5-Year AfCFTA Implementation Review at the Ministerial Roundtable.
The country’s delegation, led by Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, joined fellow African ministers in deliberating on strategies to strengthen the trade pact and unlock its transformative potential.
The report outlines actionable recommendations that not only chart Nigeria’s next phase of engagement but also offer a model for other African nations to align their own strategies with the wider AfCFTA framework.
Speaking at the roundtable, Dr. Oduwole said, “Nigeria’s presentation of the first 5-year AfCFTA Implementation Review demonstrates our commitment to making intra-African trade a reality. This review is not just a reflection of progress so far but a roadmap for actionable steps that can inspire and guide all member states toward shared economic growth.”
Observers say the move could set a new benchmark for accountability and progress tracking within AfCFTA implementation. By institutionalizing review mechanisms, Nigeria is expected to inspire other countries to embed similar structures, ensuring that the free trade area delivers on its promise of shared prosperity across the continent.
The AfCFTA—one of the most ambitious trade projects globally—seeks to create a single market for goods and services, eliminate tariffs, and deepen regional integration among its 54 signatory nations. Experts believe that Nigeria’s leadership role could accelerate the pace of reforms and enhance Africa’s collective bargaining power in global trade.
