The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over what it describes as a disturbing pattern of harassment and intimidation of opposition leaders by security agencies while criminal violence continues to plague communities across Nigeria.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party condemned the police summons issued to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, as well as the violent attack on the convoy of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), in Birnin Kebbi, which left several ADC members injured.
The party warned that these actions represent a dangerous assault on democracy and further erode public confidence in the neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force.
“At a time when terrorists and criminal gangs freely operate in large parts of the North, the Nigerian Police appears more interested in silencing opposition leaders than protecting citizens,” the statement read.
The ADC recounted how a peaceful gathering of its leaders in Kaduna was attacked by thugs wielding stones and cutlasses while police reportedly stood by. Instead of arresting the perpetrators, the party alleged, security operatives are now summoning the victims for questioning.
In Kebbi, the ADC described the attack on Malami’s convoy—carried out in broad daylight and near a police outpost—as evidence of rising insecurity and the apparent unwillingness of security agencies to act decisively.
The party urged Nigerians to take note of what it called “a growing trend of politically motivated harassment,” insisting that law enforcement must redirect its focus to combating banditry and terrorism rather than being used as a tool of political suppression.
