The Anambra State House of Assembly has taken a decisive step toward justice sector reform with the passage of a landmark bill establishing the Anambra State Correctional Service.
The bill, which aims to regulate and enhance the humane and effective management of offenders, was passed during Thursday’s plenary session after a detailed clause-by-clause consideration.
As an executive bill, it provides a legal framework for both custodial and non-custodial correctional services in the state, marking a bold shift toward modern rehabilitation practices and efficient justice administration.
Announcing its passage, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, stated that the new law will officially take effect on September 18, 2025. He described the legislation as “a major milestone in strengthening Anambra’s correctional and judicial systems.”
Supporting the motion, the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, highlighted the importance of a functional correctional system in safeguarding communities. “Beyond punishment, correctional services must focus on rehabilitation and reintegration. This bill lays the foundation for a more just and secure society,” he emphasized.
With this development, Anambra State joins the growing list of Nigerian states introducing localized and rehabilitative correctional frameworks aimed at strengthening criminal justice and promoting public safety.
