The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to embrace literacy as a key driver of national identity, social cohesion, and poverty reduction, especially among underserved populations, in commemoration of the 2025 World Literacy Day.

Director General of the Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the day offers an important opportunity for reflection on the transformative power of literacy in reducing poverty, fostering lifelong learning, and building a more inclusive and equitable society.

He explained that literacy extends beyond reading and writing, describing it as a gateway to knowledge, innovation, and active participation in democracy. He urged parents, teachers, policymakers, civil society, and community leaders to renew their collective commitment toward advancing literacy across all levels.

Issa-Onilu encouraged children, youths, and adults to embrace reading and lifelong learning, while also stressing the need to strengthen public and community libraries as hubs for knowledge sharing and civic participation.

He further called for investment in digital literacy, noting that equipping Nigerians with 21st-century skills is crucial for the knowledge economy. Removing barriers to education, particularly for women, girls, and other vulnerable groups, was highlighted as another national priority.

According to him, the Agency will continue to use its nationwide structures to mobilise, sensitise, and collaborate with stakeholders in promoting literacy as a foundation for national progress.

“A literate Nigeria is a stronger Nigeria. Together, let us make reading and learning a culture that defines us as a people,” Issa-Onilu said.
