NITDA Launches Nationwide Teacher Training to Boost Digital Literacy in Nigerian Schools

Published on 19 September 2025 at 12:48

In a move aimed at enhancing digital literacy across Nigeria’s education sector, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), commenced a three-week nationwide training programme for teachers on 3rd September 2025.

The initiative began with virtual sessions involving 3,600 teachers, before transitioning into a two-day physical training in Abuja, bringing together selected participants from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Participants engaged in hands-on learning across the six competence areas of the National Digital Literacy Framework (NDLF), which include operation of digital devices, information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, safety, and problem solving.

The training seeks to equip teachers with modern tools and innovative teaching methods that will improve classroom delivery, foster creativity, and prepare students to actively participate in the digital economy. NITDA supported the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) to integrate digital literacy into the newly released basic education curriculum.

For long-term impact, selected participants demonstrating exceptional aptitude will be trained as Master Trainers, enabling them to cascade the knowledge to other teachers nationwide.

Anchored on President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), the programme represents a national drive to achieve 70% digital literacy in Nigeria by 2027, positioning the country for greater technological competitiveness.
