Ondo, October 14, 2025 — The Ondo State Government has officially launched the “Tech a Girl; Pad a Girl Child” initiative, providing 5,000 sanitary towels to schoolgirls across selected secondary schools in the state as part of efforts to promote digital empowerment and menstrual hygiene.
The program, aligned with activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child, brought together 1,000 students from schools across the Central senatorial district, according to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye. She emphasized the initiative aims to empower girls while encouraging boys to respect and understand the challenges girls face during their menstrual cycle. Dr. Osamaye noted that the initiative would expand to other senatorial districts, highlighting the state government’s commitment to equipping young girls with technology skills and educational opportunities in the digital era.
The initiative was guided by the theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis”, underscoring the resilience and leadership potential of the girl child, even in challenging circumstances. Dr. Osamaye encouraged girls to see themselves not merely as beneficiaries of development but as drivers of change.
Engaging the students in STEM education, the Chairman of the Ondo State Information Technology Agency (SITA), Tomide Akinribido, trained them in data analysis, graphic design, and ICT, promoting computer literacy and confidence in technology. He highlighted that technology and education are critical areas where girls must not be left behind in a rapidly advancing digital world.
Additionally, Mrs. Aarinola Adamolekun, Full Board Member of the Ondo State Hospital Management Board, conducted sessions on personal hygiene and menstrual health management, advising girls to track their cycles and view menstruation as a natural part of womanhood. She also urged male students to treat female classmates with respect, particularly during their monthly flow.
Students from over 18 secondary schools across the state participated in the sessions, gaining knowledge on digital literacy and menstrual hygiene management. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, said the initiative demonstrates the state government’s investment in the future of children and its commitment to celebrating and empowering the girl child.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the state government for prioritizing their welfare and pledged to utilize the skills and knowledge imparted during the program.
