The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping Nigerian teachers with free data and digital tools to enhance learning outcomes and bridge the technological divide in the education sector.

Speaking at the Ministerial Roundtable on Zero-Rated Data and Devices for Teachers, held on October 23, 2025, in Abuja, Dr. Alausa emphasized that the initiative is a strategic step toward ensuring that financial barriers no longer prevent teachers from integrating technology into classroom instruction.

The event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the UK-funded PLANE Programme, marked the official launch of the pilot phase of the Zero-Rated Data and Mobile Devices Initiative under the Education Public-Private Partnership (ePPP) framework. The project is designed to provide teachers—particularly those in underserved and rural communities—with free internet access and affordable smart devices to facilitate digital learning.

Dr. Alausa also unveiled solar-powered smart boards embedded with Nigerian curricula, highlighting them as vital tools for interactive learning. He announced the formation of a Ministerial Implementation Committee (MIC) chaired by him and coordinated by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), with key partners including TRCN, NERDC, NITDA, Airtel, MTN, UBA, AWS, UNICEF, UNESCO, and FCDO.

Outlining further plans, the Minister revealed that the government, in partnership with Coursera, AWS, and Pluralsight, will establish a Digital Training Academy to enhance teachers’ technological capacity. Additionally, he said the Ministry aims to equip all public schools with smartboards and artificial intelligence-based learning tools by 2027 as part of a broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s education system.

Dr. Alausa reaffirmed that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, education reform remains a top priority. “No teacher will be left behind in Nigeria’s transition to digital learning,” he declared, emphasizing that empowering teachers is fundamental to achieving inclusive and high-quality education in a technology-driven world.
