The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has organised a statewide training workshop for planners and statisticians, aimed at enhancing the capacity of participants to design, implement, and monitor social protection programmes effectively across the state.

The initiative builds on Lagos State’s recent achievements in social protection, including recognition for the quality of data generated through the Lagos State Single Social Register (LASSR) and the Governor’s award as “Champion of Care: Driving Social Protection with Unwavering Commitment and Exceptional Responsiveness” from the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), Abuja. The award underscores the state’s dedication to improving the welfare of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.

During the workshop, seasoned experts facilitated sessions covering key aspects of social protection implementation, including the overview and concept of social protection, strategic use of the LASSR, and other essential tools for effective programme delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, the Director of the Social Protection Coordinating Department (SPCD) and State Coordinator of the Lagos State Operations Coordinating Unit (LASOCU), Mrs. Oluwakemi Garbadeen-Adedeji, emphasised that the LASSR is a vital tool for poverty reduction and inclusive growth, enabling targeted support to poor and vulnerable households.

Also contributing, Mr. Muhammad Okorie, Programme and Social Policy Manager for UNICEF, noted that the agency remains committed to supporting inclusive development and partnering with Lagos State to improve the lives of residents.

Mr. Femi Orojimi, Director of the Budget Department, highlighted the importance of tracking government spending on social protection programmes, stressing that statisticians and planners must possess in-depth knowledge of both planning and fund-tracking processes to ensure accountability and transparency. The Director of Economic Planning, Mr. Saheed Olowonishaye, reinforced the value of the training, explaining how participants’ input can significantly influence programme outcomes and positively impact households across the state.

The comprehensive statewide training for statisticians and planners demonstrates Lagos State Government’s unwavering commitment to building a more inclusive and supportive environment for its residents, promoting shared prosperity and ensuring that social protection programmes achieve their intended impact.STONEREPORTERS NEWSROOM ๐Ÿ“
