The Federal Government has restated its commitment to advancing skills-based education and strengthening the creative media sector as part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s workforce for the future.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, fnipr, gave the assurance in Abuja on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris Mohammed Bugaje, and executives of the Creative Media Sector Skills Council, led by its Chairperson, Hajiya Fatima Haliru.

Idris emphasized the importance of prioritizing skills over paper qualifications, describing the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) as a “game-changer” for professionals who acquired competencies through hands-on experience but lack formal certification.

“The message is clear: skills, not just degrees, will define the future of our workforce. Many young Nigerians are already talented in photography, cinematography, and digital services. This framework gives them recognition, opening pathways for higher training, employment, and entrepreneurship,” the Minister said.

He pledged close collaboration with NBTE and the Skills Council to standardize and certify skills within the creative industry, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He further assured stakeholders across the broadcast, advertising, and information sectors of the Ministry’s full support in raising professional standards, unlocking economic opportunities, and empowering young people.

In their remarks, Prof. Bugaje and Hajiya Fatima commended the Ministry for championing reforms in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda. Bugaje noted that the Creative Media Sector Skills Council, established just seven months ago as Nigeria’s 20th sectoral skills council, has already developed 24 new qualifications in audio production, content creation, and photography. He stressed that the RPL scheme will help certify apprentices and informally trained professionals with nationally recognized NSQ certificates.

Hajiya Fatima added that the Council has over 70% private sector participation, ensuring alignment with global best practices so that the industry drives skills development.

The event was attended by senior government and media executives, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Chinasa Ogbodo; the Director-General of NTA, Malam Abdulhameed Dembos; DG of FRCN, Dr. Mohammed Bulama; DG of VON, Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace; DG of ARCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo; MD of NAN, Malam Ali M. Ali; and the President of RATTAWU, Prince Emeka Kalu.
