Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu, a veterinary doctor based in Abuja and former Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, FCT Chapter, was killed on Friday night, October 3, during a violent attack at his residence in Kubwa. The assailants also abducted his three children, while his wife and youngest child were left behind.
According to reports, gunmen stormed the family home along the Kubwa-Kaduna road. The deceased’s body was later discovered by the roadside, and the abductors have yet to contact the family regarding ransom or demands. Authorities have launched an investigation to locate the perpetrators and ensure the safe return of the children.
Kubwa and surrounding areas of Abuja have experienced recurring security challenges, including kidnappings and armed attacks. Analysts link these incidents to criminal networks operating along major highways connecting the Federal Capital Territory to neighboring states, as well as gaps in local security coverage and socio-economic pressures that contribute to vulnerability in urban peripheries.
Security measures in Abuja involve joint patrols by federal and local police, collaboration with community vigilance groups, and occasional military support. Despite these measures, violent incidents continue, highlighting ongoing gaps in preventive strategies and rapid response capabilities.
Residents and community representatives have expressed concern over the targeting of professionals and families in the area. Experts stress the need for improved coordination between law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and local communities, as well as timely reporting of suspicious activities, to reduce such attacks.
Authorities continue to appeal to the public for credible information to aid the investigation, while family members and community leaders await updates on the status and safety of the abducted children.
