The Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has reaffirmed its commitment to youth and community empowerment by launching initiatives designed to equip citizens with practical skills for today’s evolving economy. The announcement came during a sensitization programme organized by the Edo State Board for Technical and Vocational Education (BTVE) in partnership with the Richard George Foundation and the Voice Aid Association.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, stated that the initiatives are part of the state government’s vision to build a more inclusive and equitable society. She introduced three key programmes: the Green Nursing Programme, the Internship Programme, and the Women in Business Initiative, all aimed at fostering skills development, innovation, and entrepreneurship among youth and residents.

The programmes include hands-on training designed to bridge the gap between education and employable skills. The ‘Waste-to-Wealth’ project, implemented by the Richard George Foundation, has already empowered 120 students at the Technical College, combining sustainability with entrepreneurial skills. Participants were trained over twelve weeks, learning practical techniques alongside principles of creativity and business innovation.

The Executive Chairman of BTVE, Barr. Onomen Briggs, praised the collaboration, highlighting the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in preparing youth for the challenges of the modern workforce. She acknowledged the Foundation’s role in creating pathways for innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.

Mr. Richard George, founder of the Richard George Foundation, emphasized that the launch was about more than programmes; it represents a movement toward empowerment, sustainability, and collaboration. He noted that each initiative is structured to inspire creativity, expand opportunities, and equip participants with the tools to succeed in a competitive environment.

Observers familiar with Edo State note that the programmes reflect a strategic push by the government to integrate skill acquisition, entrepreneurship, and sustainable practices into education, ensuring young people can participate meaningfully in the state’s economic development.
