Kaduna State has celebrated 23 exceptional teachers across its local government areas for their dedication, professionalism, and contribution to shaping young minds. The event, organised by the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB), marks the first time basic school teachers have been formally recognised in the state.
Speaking at the ceremony, KADSUBEB Executive Chairman, Mubarak Muhammad, described the awards as a milestone for education in Kaduna State, noting that the recognition aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s SUSTAIN Agenda. He emphasised that teachers are central to transforming lives and fostering development, and that rewarding excellence should extend beyond spiritual recognition to tangible acknowledgment on earth.
The “Best Teacher Award” aimed to spotlight educators with exceptional teaching skills, leadership qualities, and commitment to the profession, while also motivating professionalism and ethical conduct among peers. A total of 115 teachers were nominated across the 23 local government areas, with nominees assessed on classroom management, teaching competence, and adherence to professional ethics. The selection process involved credible institutions including the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Kaduna Basic Education Accountability Mechanism (KADBEAM), Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA), Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), and the Ministry of Education.
Representing Governor Uba Sani, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Sani Sambo, commended KADSUBEB for organising the maiden edition and highlighted the administration’s commitment to improving educational access and quality. He noted achievements such as the construction of 62 new secondary schools, 707 new classrooms, renovation of 2,326 classrooms, provision of over 30,000 units of pupil furniture, and expanded scholarships. Tuition fees at state-owned tertiary institutions were also halved to ease access to higher education.
Mrs. Esther Affun of Chikun Local Government Area, named overall best teacher, expressed gratitude for the transparent process and recognition, noting that the awards would encourage teachers to continue giving their best.
Each awardee received a cheque of N500,000 alongside a certificate, while scholarships were announced by Prof. Yahaya Ibrahim, Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board, to further support their education.
The initiative was supported by partners including UNICEF, Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), Save the Children International (SCI), Reaching Out-of-School Children Project (ROOSC), Nigerian Breweries, TRCN, and Zenith Bank, underscoring the collaborative effort to promote excellence in Kaduna’s educational system.
