Anambra State celebrated World Igbo Day on Monday with a grand display of the cultural heritage of the Igbo people, drawing participants from the state’s five geopolitical zones, Delta, Rivers, and other regions across the globe. The finale took place at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, showcasing cultural dances, traditional music, and the unity of Igbos worldwide.
During the event, the Oha na Eze Ndigbo and Igbo representatives globally called for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, citing concerns over his continued detention and the marginalization of the Igbo people.
A significant highlight was the conferment of the traditional title “Oku Nyelu Ife Ndigbo” on Governor Chukwuma Soludo by the apex Igbo cultural organization. In his acceptance speech, Governor Soludo thanked the group for recognizing his commitment as a Pan-Africanist and urged global Igbo stakeholders to convene and deliberate on the future of the Igbo nation, whether within Nigeria or pursuing greater autonomy.
Governor Soludo also criticized elements within the IPOB movement for engaging in violent crimes, including kidnapping and armed robbery, promising continued efforts to maintain peace in the state and promote development.
Chief Emeka Sibeudu, Secretary-General of Oha na Eze Ndigbo and former Deputy Governor of Anambra, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to Igbo prosperity and called on the people to uphold mutual support and unity. Traditional rulers, including Igwe Charles Agbala of Uke and Igwe Joel Egwuonwu of Umuawulu, echoed calls for solidarity among Igbos to advance common causes.
Observers familiar with Anambra note that the celebration combined cultural pride with a strategic platform for political discourse and advocacy, emphasizing both heritage preservation and the socio-political aspirations of the Igbo people.
