The Federal Government has clarified that English Language and Mathematics will continue to be mandatory for all students registering for their O’Level examinations, following public confusion over recent reforms to admission requirements into tertiary institutions.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Federal Ministry of Education emphasized that the new policy on streamlined admission criteria does not exempt any candidate from taking the two core subjects. Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, explained that the clarification was necessary after misinterpretations of the revised framework began circulating.

Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa stated that the reforms are intended to promote fairness and inclusiveness, ensuring that qualified students are not barred from admission due to shortcomings in subjects unrelated to their chosen programs. While the updated framework allows some flexibility for specific courses, he reiterated that English and Mathematics remain essential components of the Senior School Certificate Examination.

The Ministry further highlighted that proficiency in these subjects is fundamental to a solid educational foundation and critical for producing graduates capable of competing on a global scale. Students, parents, and stakeholders were urged to rely solely on official government channels for accurate information regarding education policies and reforms.
