The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been accused of undermining democratic principles and the independence of the judiciary, following its actions and statements concerning ongoing local government disputes currently before the Supreme Court.
Mallam Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, issued the rebuke in response to claims by the APC that the governor allegedly bribed the leadership of the Local Government Workers’ Union (NULGE) to stay away from council secretariats. Rasheed described the allegations as baseless, unfounded, and emblematic of the APC’s disregard for the rule of law and constitutional governance.
According to Rasheed, the APC’s conduct has repeatedly flouted legal rulings, starting with a falsified Court of Appeal judgment that the party used to claim a reinstatement of previously sacked chairmen. The APC also reportedly ignored a subsequent Court of Appeal decision affirming the legality of PDP chairmen and councillors, instead attempting to occupy council secretariats without legal authority.
“Behaving like political robbers in a lawless system, the state APC went further, attempting to claim public funds through layers of illegality until legally restrained,” Rasheed said. He stressed that the judiciary has intervened to clarify and enforce legal rulings, but the opposition continues to show blatant disrespect for the judicial process, even while the matter is pending before the apex court.
Rasheed urged the public to disregard the APC’s latest claims, emphasizing that the workers’ union operates independently and that efforts to prevent illegal access to council funds are a collective, lawful effort by stakeholders.
“The opposition has reached the end of its unlawful schemes; the people have resisted illegality, and the world now awaits the final judgment of the judiciary,” Rasheed concluded.
