“They Now Call Me Okpe’s Baby” — Edo Governor Okpebholo Celebrates Public Reception, Defends Leadership Style

Published on 1 November 2026 at 08:26

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has expressed satisfaction with the reception he receives from residents, saying his popular nickname has changed from “Akpako Rescue” to “Okpe’s Baby”, a development he interprets as evidence of growing affection and public acceptance.

The governor made the remarks in a video circulating on social media, in which he spoke about his relationship with Edo residents and the encouragement he draws from their reactions during public engagements. His comments offered a personal assessment of his popularity rather than an independently measured indication of public opinion.

Okpebholo said the change in nickname had become particularly noticeable during his interactions with members of the public. According to him, residents increasingly address him in affectionate terms, replacing an earlier expression associated with his political identity.

He described the experience as gratifying and suggested that the reception motivates him to continue serving the state. His remarks presented public recognition as an important source of encouragement in a demanding political office.

The governor's comments have attracted attention because nicknames and informal expressions often play a significant role in Nigerian political communication. Such labels can emerge from campaign activities, public appearances or interactions between politicians and their supporters.

However, a politician's popularity cannot be reliably determined from enthusiastic receptions alone. Public gatherings may include committed supporters, while broader assessments of leadership require evidence from diverse communities and measurable governance outcomes.

Okpebholo assumed office on November 12, 2024, after winning the Edo State governorship election held on September 21 that year. He contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress and defeated Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Okpebholo the winner with 291,667 votes, while Ighodalo received 247,274 votes. Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata finished third with 22,763 votes.

His victory returned the APC to the Government House in Benin City after eight years of PDP leadership under former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Before becoming governor, Okpebholo represented Edo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly. His transition from the Senate to the governorship placed him at the centre of efforts to consolidate the APC's political position in the state.

Since assuming office, his administration has emphasised infrastructure development, security, education and improvements in public services as major priorities.

The governor has repeatedly presented road construction and rehabilitation as essential to improving transportation, connecting communities and supporting economic activities.

His government has also announced interventions involving schools, healthcare facilities and public infrastructure, arguing that these projects are intended to address longstanding development challenges.

Supporters have praised his emphasis on visible projects and direct engagement with communities, describing his approach as practical and accessible.

Opposition figures, however, have questioned aspects of the administration's performance, including project implementation, public spending and the management of state institutions.

These competing assessments illustrate why claims of widespread approval require examination beyond political gatherings and personal testimonials.

Edo State faces development challenges involving road infrastructure, employment opportunities, public healthcare, education and security.

Residents in urban centres such as Benin City have raised concerns over road conditions, drainage and flooding, while rural communities continue to seek improved access to essential services.

The effectiveness of the administration's programmes will depend on whether completed projects provide lasting benefits and whether public resources are managed transparently.

Public enthusiasm can strengthen a governor's political standing, but it does not replace accountability for campaign promises or the responsibilities attached to elected office.

Okpebholo's leadership style has also generated discussion because of his informal public communication and occasional controversial remarks.

Some supporters regard his manner as evidence of authenticity and a willingness to communicate without excessive political formality.

Critics argue that the governor's public statements should demonstrate greater precision, particularly when addressing government policy and matters of public importance.

Such disagreements are common in democratic politics, where personal presentation and administrative performance are assessed separately by different sections of the electorate.

The nickname “Akpako Rescue” has been associated with Okpebholo's public image, although the available account does not independently establish its precise origin or the circumstances in which it first became popular.

His assertion that residents now prefer “Okpe's Baby” similarly reflects his experience of public interactions rather than a documented statewide change in how he is addressed.

Nevertheless, the governor's willingness to discuss these informal expressions illustrates the importance he attaches to maintaining a personal connection with supporters.

Political nicknames have historically been used across Nigeria to communicate familiarity, loyalty and identification with public figures.

They can help politicians establish recognition beyond formal titles, particularly among grassroots supporters who participate in rallies, community meetings and campaign activities.

At the same time, such expressions may carry different meanings among supporters, critics and politically neutral residents.

For Okpebholo, the latest remarks appear intended to highlight a positive relationship with the people he governs.

The governor's political position has strengthened since his election, with the APC seeking to consolidate its influence across Edo's three senatorial districts.

His administration's relationship with the federal government, also controlled by the APC, has been presented by supporters as an opportunity to attract investment and coordinate development programmes.

However, the benefits of political alignment depend on actual policy outcomes, funding arrangements and the successful delivery of projects.

The state government's performance will remain subject to scrutiny from the opposition, civil society organisations, the media and residents.

That scrutiny is particularly important because public confidence can change as economic conditions, infrastructure needs and security concerns evolve.

The governor's comments also come as Nigerian political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Although Edo's next regular governorship election is scheduled separately from the 2027 national elections, the political standing of state governors can influence party organisation and voter mobilisation.

Okpebholo's public engagements may therefore carry significance beyond personal popularity, particularly as the APC seeks support for its national candidates.

For residents, however, the most consequential measure of leadership remains the delivery of services and improvements in everyday living conditions.

The governor has expressed happiness over the affectionate reception he says he receives, but the wider public assessment of his administration will depend on its record.

His remarks underscore the value he places on public recognition while leaving the broader question of governance performance open to continued evaluation.

As Okpebholo approaches the second anniversary of his administration, expectations surrounding infrastructure, public welfare and accountability are likely to remain central to discussions about his leadership.

Whether residents embrace his preferred nickname or continue using earlier expressions, the governor's enduring political reputation will ultimately be shaped by the results of his administration and the judgment of the people of Edo State.
