Former senator and legal practitioner Dino Melaye has criticized what he described as the distortion of democratic principles in Nigeria, saying the current system of governance has drifted far from the ideals of democracy.
In a statement shared on Sunday, Melaye lamented that the true meaning of democracy — a government of the people, by the people, and for the people — has been replaced by what he termed “greediocracy”, a system that serves only the self-interest of a privileged few.
“The Nigeria of our dream is when we start practising democracy in its lucid interpretation — government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” Melaye stated. “What we have right now is greediocracy — government of the greedy, by the greedy, and for the greedy.”
The outspoken former lawmaker and Democratic Evangelist emphasized that genuine democratic governance can only thrive when leaders prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal gain. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and committed to holding public officials accountable to restore the true essence of democracy.
Melaye, who has consistently advocated for reforms and transparency in governance, reiterated that national progress depends on leadership that embodies empathy, integrity, and service — not greed.
