Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that he had planned to retire from active politics but decided to reconsider following calls from the country’s younger generation — popularly referred to as Gen Z — urging him to remain in power.

Speaking during a public event in Kampala on Thursday, President Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, said the appeal from young people inspired him to “continue the struggle for national stability and progress.”

“I wanted to retire from active politics, but Uganda's Gen Z youths requested me to contest again for President,” Museveni said.

The 81-year-old leader noted that the younger generation expressed concern about the country’s political future and continuity of his developmental policies if he stepped down.

Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, has previously stated that his mission was to build a self-reliant Uganda anchored on peace, agriculture, industrialization, and regional integration.

While his remarks have sparked mixed reactions across the country, supporters believe his continued leadership ensures stability, whereas critics argue that Uganda needs fresh leadership and generational change.

Political analysts say Museveni’s comments could be an early indication of his intention to run again in the next presidential election slated for 2026, despite earlier suggestions of retirement.

The statement has also generated strong debate online, with many young Ugandans questioning whether their generation truly supports another term for the president.

For now, President Museveni remains tight-lipped on whether he will officially declare his candidacy — but his words have once again ignited discussions about Uganda’s political future.
