The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially inaugurated its new leadership, as Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, assumed office as the substantive Chairman of the Commission. The handover took place on Thursday at INEC’s national headquarters in Abuja, marking what many described as a new chapter for Nigeria’s electoral administration.
The event, attended by senior officials and guests, was both formal and symbolic — signaling continuity and renewed dedication to democratic governance.
In her address, the outgoing Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, presented the handover documents to Professor Amupitan and expressed confidence in his ability to steer the Commission effectively. She noted that his assumption of office comes at a critical time, with the Commission deep in preparation for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu highlighted the enormous expectations placed on INEC, emphasizing the importance of credible elections in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy. She assured the new Chairman that he would be supported by a capable and experienced team of dedicated professionals who have continued to uphold the Commission’s mandate despite challenges.
During the ceremony, Professor Amupitan met with INEC’s directors, who oversee the Commission’s 23 departments. The meeting served as a formal introduction to the management team responsible for key operational areas, including voter education, logistics, and election monitoring.
In a notable show of solidarity, a delegation from the University of Jos — Professor Amupitan’s alma mater — attended the event. The group included the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and other top university officials, reflecting the institution’s pride in one of its distinguished alumni taking on such a vital national role.
The new Chairman was accompanied by his wife, Professor Yemisi Amupitan, and their children, as colleagues and guests congratulated him on his appointment.
Professor Amupitan’s leadership is expected to usher in a new phase for the Commission as it prepares for upcoming elections and continues to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
