The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has inaugurated a newly built Naval Base in Ayakoro, Bayelsa State — a strategic project aimed at strengthening maritime security, infrastructure, and regional collaboration in the Niger Delta.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, described the project as a major milestone in the Commission’s ongoing effort to promote peace and sustainable development across the region. He emphasized that the establishment of the base was a clear demonstration of the NDDC’s commitment to securing the waterways and fostering economic stability for local communities.
Dr. Ogbuku highlighted that the new base is more than just another infrastructural project; it stands as a symbol of partnership between the NDDC, the Nigerian Navy, and the people of Ayakoro community — who generously donated several hectares of land for both the Naval Base and a proposed Navy School.
The newly commissioned base is equipped with modern operational and administrative facilities designed to enhance naval efficiency. These include a fully furnished administrative complex, accommodation quarters, a 40-man houseboat, gunboats for patrol operations, an operational floating jetty, a Toyota Hilux for mobility, and solar-powered backup systems to ensure energy reliability.
According to Dr. Ogbuku, the new Naval Base represents a significant boost to maritime security in the Niger Delta, helping to protect vital waterways, support economic activities, and promote lasting peace. He commended the Nigerian Navy for its commitment to safeguarding the region and applauded the Ayakoro community for its cooperation and patriotic spirit.
“At NDDC, we remain steadfast in our resolve to build, empower, and secure the Niger Delta — one project, one community, one partnership at a time,” Ogbuku stated.
