The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, has dismissed reports circulating online that female inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja are being left without sanitary pads and basic menstrual care. The Service described the claim as “false, misleading, and not reflective of the reality on the ground.”

According to the official statement, the NCoS maintains that female inmates across its facilities receive free sanitary pads and hygiene kits every month, with each distribution recorded in the inmates’ welfare registers. The Service insists that menstrual health is a routine part of its welfare structure and not an area of neglect.

The Command also highlighted the presence of healthcare units within custodial centres, staffed by qualified nurses and doctors who attend to inmates’ needs, including menstrual-related health conditions. Where necessary, inmates are referred to external hospitals for further treatment at no cost to them.

In addition to internal support, the NCoS disclosed that it works closely with civil society groups, faith-based organisations and development partners who regularly donate sanitary materials and run menstrual-hygiene awareness programmes. A recent donation from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Command added, further strengthened their menstrual health support for female inmates.

Reaffirming its broader welfare commitment, the NCoS said it remains guided by the Nigerian Constitution as well as international standards such as the Nelson Mandela Rules and the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.

The Service, however, urged journalists and content creators to verify sensitive information before publication, warning that unverified claims could mislead the public and damage the integrity of public institutions.
