An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Rotimi Richard Ajayi, has reportedly been detained over the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old security guard, Ayineka Ayomide Daniel, at TSL Halogen Company in Itori, Ogun State.
The incident occurred on October 14, 2026, at the company's premises, where Daniel and another security guard were reportedly shot while responding to a suspected security threat. Daniel died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck, while his colleague suffered injuries to both hands and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
According to an investigation published by SaharaReporters on October 21, the two guards suspected that armed robbers had entered the premises at approximately 2 a.m. and approached the police officer, who was reportedly asleep, to alert him.
The deceased's father, Ayineka Oluwashola, alleged that the officer opened fire shortly after the guards woke him, striking his son in the neck and injuring the second guard.
Oluwashola said the family initially received misleading information about the incident, including a claim that Daniel had been involved in a fight and sustained injuries.
He explained that the family later discovered that his son had been shot at his workplace and had died.
The deceased's younger sister, Ayineka Folashade, also questioned the circumstances surrounding the shooting, citing information allegedly provided by the surviving security guard.
She maintained that her brother and his colleague had approached the officer to warn him about a suspected intrusion, rather than confront him.
However, a company representative identified as Mr Abayomi gave a different account, describing the incident as an accidental discharge during an attempt to respond to the suspected intruder.
According to Abayomi, the guards and the police officer were working at the same location when the suspected security breach occurred. He said Daniel was shot while they were attempting to deal with the situation.
The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the circumstances in which the officer discharged his firearm, particularly whether the shooting was accidental or involved any unlawful conduct.
The case has reportedly been transferred from the Itori Police Station to the Ogun State Police Headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
Abayomi confirmed that the officer was being detained and said the Assistant Inspector-General of Police responsible for Zone 2 had directed a thorough investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Daniel's family has demanded justice and called for the circumstances of his death to be fully established.
His father said the family had visited the police headquarters and submitted a statement requesting that anyone found responsible be prosecuted.
The family also expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as inadequate communication from the company following the shooting.
Folashade alleged that company representatives failed to contact the family directly or attend Daniel's burial, although the company reportedly provided some assistance with burial arrangements.
Daniel, who had obtained a National Diploma in Business Administration, reportedly celebrated his 26th birthday on October 11, just three days before his death.
His relatives described him as a young man working to build his future and said they wanted investigators to establish how he lost his life while carrying out his security duties.
The family disclosed that Daniel was buried without a post-mortem examination, explaining that the condition of his body influenced the decision to proceed with the burial.
As of October 22, the Ogun State Police Command had not publicly released a detailed account of the shooting or announced the outcome of its investigation.
SaharaReporters said efforts to obtain a response from the command's spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, were unsuccessful before its report was published.
No formal criminal charge against the officer has been confirmed.
The investigation is expected to clarify the sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm and the injuries sustained by both security guards.
Although Ajayi has reportedly been detained, his detention does not establish criminal responsibility. The allegations remain subject to investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.
For Daniel's family, the central demand remains an impartial investigation and accountability based on the evidence gathered.
