Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested an 18-year-old motorcycle rider, identified as Aondoyima Agber, for allegedly attempting to transport a section of a vandalised pipeline in Gou community, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The arrest was made on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted by troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation WHIRL STROKE, following reports of suspected pipeline vandalism in the community.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 21, by the Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu.
According to the military, troops were conducting a fighting patrol when they received information about suspected vandals operating in the area.
The soldiers immediately moved to the reported location to investigate the activities and prevent further damage to the pipeline infrastructure.
However, the suspected vandals reportedly fled before the troops arrived.
During the operation, the soldiers apprehended Agber, who was allegedly attempting to transport a section of the pipeline using a motorcycle.
The military did not disclose whether the suspect was directly involved in removing the pipeline or whether he had been engaged by other individuals to transport it.
It also did not establish how the pipeline section came into his possession or whether he had prior knowledge of the alleged vandalism.
The Joint Task Force confirmed that the suspect remained in custody pending further directives from the relevant authorities.
According to the statement, troops have continued security operations in the area to deter criminal activities and prevent further attacks on critical infrastructure.
The military also said the sustained deployment was intended to disrupt the activities of armed bandits and other criminal groups operating within its area of responsibility.
Reacting to the arrest, the Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE and General Officer Commanding, 5 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their prompt response to the intelligence received.
Gara described the operation as a proactive effort to prevent the destruction of critical national assets.
He warned individuals involved in the vandalism of public infrastructure to desist from such activities, stressing the importance of protecting facilities that serve communities and support economic development.
The military commander also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.
He emphasised that cooperation between local communities and security personnel remained essential to preventing criminal activities and sustaining peace.
Pipeline vandalism is a serious concern because damage to energy infrastructure can disrupt essential services, create safety hazards and impose financial costs on operators and the wider economy.
Depending on the type of pipeline and the substances it carries, unauthorised interference may also expose nearby communities to environmental contamination, fire hazards or other risks.
However, the military statement did not identify the pipeline's operator, specify what it transported or disclose the estimated value of the recovered section.
There was also no confirmation that the incident caused an oil spill, service disruption or environmental damage.
These details remain important in determining the full consequences of the suspected vandalism.
The circumstances of Agber's arrest also raise questions about whether the suspected operation involved an organised group and whether other individuals were responsible for dismantling the pipeline.
Although the military reported that suspected vandals escaped before the troops reached the scene, their identities and number were not disclosed.
No additional arrests were announced in connection with the operation.
The military did not provide information about any criminal charges filed against Agber or indicate when he might be transferred to the appropriate investigative or prosecuting authority.
His arrest remains part of an ongoing security investigation, and the allegations against him have not been established before a court.
The suspect is therefore entitled to the presumption of innocence and other protections guaranteed under Nigerian law.
Operation WHIRL STROKE is a joint security operation involved in addressing armed violence and other security threats in parts of Nigeria's North-Central region.
Its activities include patrols, intelligence-led operations and efforts to protect communities and infrastructure from criminal attacks.
The latest arrest highlights the role of information from local sources in directing security personnel towards suspected criminal activities.
According to the military's account, intelligence received during a routine patrol enabled troops to respond to the reported pipeline vandalism.
However, the arrest of one suspect does not establish that the wider group allegedly involved has been dismantled.
Further investigations will be necessary to determine who removed the pipeline section, the intended destination of the material and whether additional suspects can be identified.
For residents of Gou community and surrounding settlements, the military has reiterated its commitment to maintaining security patrols and preventing further criminal activity.
Major General Gara encouraged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible information that could assist investigations and help protect public infrastructure.
As of the latest military statement, Agber remained in custody, while troops continued operations in the area.
The authorities have not announced the arrest of the suspected vandals who reportedly fled the scene.
The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the recovered pipeline section and determine whether further action will be taken against those allegedly involved.
