Katsina Police Bust Child Kidnapping Syndicate, Arrest Four Suspects, Rescue Three-Year-Old Boy

The Katsina State Police Command has dismantled a suspected child kidnapping syndicate linked to the abduction of two children aged three and four-and-a-half years, arresting four suspects and rescuing one of the victims unharmed.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu.

According to the police, the breakthrough followed investigations into two separate kidnapping incidents involving children below the age of five, with ransom demands allegedly made against their families.

The first incident was reported on October 5 by Abubakar Ahmed Rufa'i, who informed the police that his four-and-a-half-year-old son, Muhammed Abubakar, had been abducted on September 30.

The kidnappers allegedly contacted the family and initially demanded ₦5 million for the child's release.

Police said the suspects subsequently agreed to accept ₦20,000, described as feeding money, which was paid through Point-of-Sale accounts.

Following the transaction, operatives of the command's Violent Crime Response Unit began tracing the payment.

Their investigation led to the arrest of two POS operators, identified as Abubakar Muntari and Aminu Idris, who allegedly received and withdrew the money.

While investigations into the first incident were continuing, police received another complaint on October 8 from Abdulrahaman Bello, who reported that his three-year-old son, Yakubu Abdulrahman, was missing.

According to the command, the child's abductors subsequently contacted the family and demanded ransom, including ₦100,000 described as feeding money.

Investigators used technical analysis to examine the two incidents and reportedly established links suggesting that the same criminal network was involved.

The findings prompted detectives to organise a sting operation aimed at identifying individuals collecting money on behalf of the suspected kidnappers.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. on October 8, operatives arrested a 16-year-old suspect, Abdulhakim Mustapha, while he was allegedly attempting to collect money at a POS terminal.

Police said the two previously arrested POS operators identified the teenager as the person who had collected the payment associated with the earlier kidnapping.

During questioning, Mustapha allegedly admitted involvement and provided information that led investigators to a location where the younger victim was being held.

Acting on the information, detectives raided the suspected hideout and successfully rescued three-year-old Yakubu Abdulrahman unharmed.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of another suspect, Aminu Musa, aged 20.

According to the police, Musa was allegedly responsible for guarding the abducted child and coordinating ransom negotiations with the family.

Investigators recovered a SIM card reportedly used during communications concerning the ransom demands.

The police said information obtained during interrogation also led to the identification of two additional suspected accomplices, known as Ibrahim and Mohammed, also called Malam.

Both individuals were reportedly at large at the time of the police announcement.

The command said efforts were continuing to locate the fleeing suspects and determine whether other individuals participated in the alleged kidnapping operations.

The arrests bring the number of suspects in police custody in connection with the investigation to four.

However, the police statement confirmed the rescue of the three-year-old boy and did not clearly establish the current circumstances of the four-and-a-half-year-old child involved in the earlier case.

Although the first family reportedly made a payment associated with the child's release, the command's public account did not provide sufficient information to independently confirm his present whereabouts and condition.

The distinction is important because the investigation involved two abducted children, but the officially reported rescue operation specifically concerned the younger victim.

The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Ali Umar Fage, commended the officers involved in the investigation and reaffirmed the command's commitment to tackling criminal activities targeting children and other vulnerable residents.

He also called on POS operators and other financial service providers to exercise greater caution when processing suspicious transactions.

The commissioner urged financial agents to verify customers' identities and promptly report transactions that could be connected to criminal activities.

The police investigation illustrates how electronic payment records and telecommunications information can assist law enforcement agencies in tracing suspected ransom transactions.

However, the involvement of a financial service operator in processing a payment does not automatically establish criminal knowledge or participation. Investigators must determine each suspect's individual role and responsibility.

The arrest of a 16-year-old also introduces considerations under Nigeria's child justice framework, which provides particular protections for children accused of criminal offences.

The allegations against all four suspects remain subject to investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.

The police have not announced convictions in connection with the case.

Kidnapping for ransom remains a serious security concern in parts of northern Nigeria, with criminal groups targeting residents of different ages and backgrounds.

Cases involving very young children present additional safeguarding concerns because victims may be unable to protect themselves or communicate effectively with authorities.

For families, ransom demands can also create significant emotional and financial pressure, particularly when the abductors threaten harm or demand immediate payment.

The Katsina State Police Command said its investigation would continue, with particular attention to identifying additional accomplices and preventing similar incidents.

The authorities have encouraged residents to provide credible information about suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

For now, police have confirmed four arrests and the successful rescue of a three-year-old boy, while further clarification is needed concerning the current status of the older child.
