A quiet New Orleans neighborhood was thrown into shock after a domestic violence incident on Pebble Street claimed the life of a Nigerian-born university professor and left two of his daughters injured. Police have arrested the victim’s 27-year-old son, Chukwuebuka Eweni, in connection with the attack.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 9:59 p.m. on November 11, 2025, when officers responded to what was described as “an aggravated battery by cutting, believed to be domestic in nature.” On arrival, police found 75-year-old Samuel Eweni, a respected computer science professor at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), unresponsive with a fatal stab wound. His two adult daughters were also found with knife injuries.

Family members told WWL Louisiana that the evening had been normal until Chukwuebuka, who has a history of mental illness but had never been violent, suddenly grabbed a knife and attacked his father and sisters. One of the injured sisters has been discharged from the hospital, while the other is still receiving treatment but is expected to recover.

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) confirmed that the suspect fled the area but was later tracked down in Jefferson Parish, where he was taken into custody and placed under medical evaluation. Detectives have since secured an arrest warrant charging him with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Officials say the motive for the attack remains unclear, but investigators are treating it as a domestic violence homicide with mental health factors under review. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the official cause of death once the autopsy is completed.

The tragedy has sparked fresh conversations about mental health, family violence, and support systems within immigrant communities in the United States.
