US House Subcommittee to Review Nigeria’s Religious Freedom Status
Washington, D.C. – The US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa will hold an open hearing on Thursday, November 20, 2025, to examine President Donald Trump’s recent move to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
If the Senate approves the designation, it could result in sanctions against Nigerian officials implicated in religious persecution and may limit certain types of US aid to the country. The review underscores ongoing challenges to religious freedom in Nigeria.
The hearing will be chaired by Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) and is scheduled for 11:00 am in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building. For wider accessibility, the session will also be streamed live online.
