Uyo, Nigeria — In a major stride toward enhancing safety and modernizing the transport sector, the Akwa Ibom State Government has unveiled a comprehensive Biometric Capturing System for commercial tricycles (Keke) and mini-buses. The initiative, championed by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, is part of the administration’s broader ARISE Agenda aimed at redefining governance through innovation and people-centered policies.

The project, coordinated by the Ministry of Transport (MOT), introduces a standardized registration process that assigns every commercial tricycle and mini-bus a unique alpha-numeric biometric number. This is accompanied by the issuance of Security QR Code Stickers to each vehicle, enabling quick identification and verification by regulatory authorities and security agencies.

According to the Ministry, the biometric system is designed to improve road safety, curb criminal activities, and streamline the operations of commercial transport in the state. Officials say the initiative will help track operators more efficiently, ensure compliance with transport regulations, and protect millions of daily commuters who rely on road transport.

Speaking on the significance of the project, government sources emphasized that the biometric capturing will serve as a crime-prevention tool, particularly in cases of robbery, kidnapping, or hit-and-run incidents involving commercial vehicles. With the QR Code Stickers, passengers and security operatives can easily authenticate vehicles, boosting public confidence in the transport system.

Stakeholders in the transport sector have welcomed the innovation, describing it as a timely intervention that aligns with global best practices. Many operators say the system will foster transparency and reduce incidents of impersonation within the industry.

The biometric initiative, officials added, marks just one of several transformative projects underway as the Umo Eno administration intensifies efforts to deliver a safer, more organized, and technologically driven transportation ecosystem.

The Ministry of Transport assured that more groundbreaking reforms will be unveiled in the coming months in line with the ARISE Agenda’s vision for a secure, efficient, and modern transport infrastructure.
