Amnesty International Nigeria has criticized the Nigerian government for not doing enough to stop attacks and abductions by bandits and armed groups in the northern parts of the country. The organization said that efforts to protect citizens have been inadequate and that some state governments and police often punish people who demand more security.
The group pointed to specific incidents, including the arrest of at least three peaceful protesters on August 8, 2020, at Refinery Junction in Kaduna South. In another case, at least twenty protesters were arrested and detained for several days in Katsina State on June 18, 2020, for protesting against banditry and violence.
Amnesty International also revealed that people who speak out against the violence and atrocities committed by gunmen in the north face smear campaigns. These campaigns are reportedly organized and carried out by paid social media influencers to discredit or intimidate critics.
