The Lagos State Government has presented its 2026 Budget Estimates to the State House of Assembly, marking a significant milestone as the final full-year budget of the current administration. The budget, tagged the Budget of Shared Prosperity, totals ₦4.237 trillion. It is projected to generate revenue of ₦3.994 trillion, leaving a funding gap of approximately ₦243.33 billion, which the government intends to manage responsibly.
This budget is centered on improving the lives of Lagosians by expanding access to essential services, strengthening state systems, completing critical infrastructure projects, and ensuring that the benefits of growth reach all residents. Lagos continues to evolve into a stronger, more competitive, and inclusive city, building on the progress achieved in sectors such as education, healthcare, transportation, housing, technology, the environment, and public safety in 2025.
The budget is structured around four main pillars aligned with the state’s THEMES+ agenda. The first pillar focuses on making Lagos a human-centered city by expanding quality education, enhancing healthcare, and deepening social protection programs. Significant allocations are dedicated to these areas, reflecting their importance in ensuring the well-being of Lagos residents.
The second pillar emphasizes the development of modern, integrated infrastructure. This involves connecting roads, railways, waterways, power grids, and digital systems to create a cohesive and efficient urban environment. Substantial funds have been allocated to transport, works, and infrastructure projects to support this vision.
Supporting a thriving and competitive economy is the third pillar. The government aims to bolster small and medium enterprises (SMEs), startups, agribusiness, manufacturing, tourism, and the creative industries. Allocations for the environment and recreational facilities underscore efforts to promote economic diversification and job creation.
The final pillar underscores the importance of effective governance. This includes strengthening fiscal systems, expanding e-governance initiatives, improving security, and building a responsive public service. Funding has been allocated to ensure these core functions are well-supported.
Out of the total budget, about ₦2.185 trillion is earmarked for capital projects, aimed at infrastructure and development initiatives, while ₦2.052 trillion will cover recurrent expenses necessary for the day-to-day running of the state and its obligations.
The leadership reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Lagos as a safe, functional, and prosperous city, touching every resident’s life. Expressing gratitude to the Lagos State House of Assembly, civil servants, party leaders, and the people of Lagos, the government emphasized that their support and expectations are vital in continuing to build a city that is safer, cleaner, more prosperous, and more inclusive than ever before.
