A fresh wave of violence has hit Niger State as armed bandits on Wednesday abducted at least 24 farmers in the Palaita community of Erena Ward, Shiroro Local Government Area, leaving residents terrified and communities on edge.

The attackers stormed the rice fields around 2:00 p.m. while farmers were busy harvesting their crops. According to a community source, the victims include several pregnant women who were taken away alongside other workers on the farmland.

In the chaos, a blind resident was also injured, underscoring the indiscriminate brutality of the assault.

The latest abduction adds to a growing string of attacks targeting Shiroro LGA, an area that has become a hotspot for armed violence, displacements, and repeated kidnappings. Local leaders say communities are exhausted, frightened, and increasingly unable to work on their farms — a situation that threatens both livelihoods and food security.

Despite frequent incidents, affected residents say they continue to feel abandoned, with little visible improvement in security responses.

With abductions becoming a near-daily reality in Niger State, the people of Shiroro are once again calling for urgent intervention to halt the crackdown on rural communities and restore safety to their farmlands.
